The Driver of Tomorrow

A long, low hall in blue and yellow with twelve testing chairs and no cars. One man in a yellow shirt stands in the aisle with his back to you. At the far end hangs a polished name board, and it is empty. The way on leads to today. You are standing in the aisle. On either side of you a row of six yellow chairs runs away towards the board, each with a wheel on a column and a cream dial on a post beside it, and most of them have something left behind on them: two hats, a folded coat, a paper cup, a newspaper, a handbag, a yellow umbrella, a blue scarf, a briefcase. A glove lies flat on the floor at the foot of the rail beside you. The fourth chair on your right is free, with a small yellow toy car resting on its rim, and that one is yours. The board itself carries the words Who taught you? and under them twelve blank name cards in two columns of six, each with an empty dark tag on it. To your left, columns and a speech balloon that reads Nervous? Yes. Impossible? No. To your right, a wall of cut-out stickers of a man in a yellow shirt. Beside the board, not above it, is a doorway with daylight in it, with the name Rijloket.nl on the lintel over it and a wall of place names a little way behind it. A ceiling fan turns slowly above the front of the hall. Taking the wheel of the free chair sends all twelve needles round, one after the other, from the front of the hall to the back, and then they stay where they stop.
